Immigration and overseas residents

Before marrying in Australia, certain requirements must be met, in particular lodgement of a Notice of Intended Marriage. The Notice may be lodged by one of the parties only (if the other person is living overseas), or posted to us (if both parties are living overseas). Please refer to our Marriage Requirements section for more information on this.

For Notices lodged by one party only:
A letter will be issued by our office verifying that a Notice has been lodged. This letter can be used for presentation to Australian Immigration Officers overseas to support an application for a fiancé visa.

Once the overseas party has arrived in Australia, all required documents have been sighted and the balance of fees is paid, a date and time for the marriage will be confirmed.

For Notices posted to us:
You can nominate the day and time you wish to be married, however if this time is already booked, we may select the next closest time for you. Confirmation of the date and time will be posted to you.

If any documentation is in a language other than English, you will be required to provide translated documents. Cheque payment must be in Australian dollars and made payable to Births, Deaths and Marriages. Payment by Visa and MasterCard is also accepted.
